Can't say enough about this site! Read about Don, his mission,
and excepts from Don's writings:

....Don Henley has an international reputation as a musician,
both as a solo artist and as a member
of the Eagles, but he has also been extremely active in environmental
and humanitarian issues. In
1997, in recognition of his efforts to save Walden Woods and his
role in establishing the Thoreau
Institute, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President
Clinton. He is also
involved in numerous other environmental projects, including conservation
efforts at the Caddo
Lake Institute in eastern Texas and the Dallas Historic Tree Coalition.

....The mission of the Walden Woods Project is two-fold: to protect
land of ecological and historic
significance surrounding Walden Pond, the famed retreat of author/philosopher
Henry D.
Thoreau; and to support the Thoreau Institute and its educational
initiatives related to the study of
the environment and the humanities.

....I grew up outside. Outdoors and outside. ....... There were
streams and ponds, tadpoles and
frogs and chameleons to catchtypical Mark Twain, Norman Rockwell,
boyhood stuff. .....as the
years have passed, I have grown to appreciate, more and more,
what (my father) taught me, not
only about growing things in the earth, but also about responsibility
and the value of hard work.

...... It seems to me that this (earth), at least for the time
being, is a pretty nice place to live. It
nurtures us both physically and spiritually. It provides us with
the very foundation of our
existence. It seems to me that believers and nonbelievers alike
have an obligation as tenants here
to act responsibly toward the Landlord; that if one insults the
Creation, one insults the Creator.
Unfortunately, most of us tend to think only in terms of our own
lifetime, or, if we have offspring,
one or two generations beyond. It seems to me that we should proceed
in good faith, with our
best efforts, as if life here were a possibility until the sun
dies.

...Where the environment is concerned, according to reams of scientific
data (any sane person can see it with his own eyes), there is
definitely
an elephant in the room. Unfortunately, there are still an alarming
number of people, including a great many officials in our federal
government, who insist there isnt. Further studies . . . is
the popular talismanic phrase.
